Witch Hunt (4.2%) our latest Limited Edition brew is now available in cask and bottle.

Roasted Chocolate Malt defines this devilishly dark Porter. Fuggles, Goldings, Celeia and Aurora hops are thrown into the cauldron to bring this beast to life. Bolt the door, find a cosy nook and get stuck in to this bewitching brew.

While the kids are out trick or treating crack open a bottle of Witch Hunt and it’ll make their return (high on colourings and sugar) and the rest of your evening all the more tolerable.

This limited edition beer was an out and out success last year and is back by popular demand.  Grab some while you can.  When it’s gone it’s gone!

We’ve called it Witch Hunt because Bishop Nicholas Ridley was martyred by Queen Mary and her quest to eradicate her dissenters has often been referred to as the Marian Killings.  Merciless she was!  So 461 years ago this week Bishop Nick burnt at the stake for standing up for his beliefs.  We raise a pint of Witch Hunt, a fine classic porter, to him.  We like to think he would have rather enjoyed it himself.

Happy Halloween all of you. Wrap up and tuck in.

Hoppy Easter everyone.  Loving the Spring here at Bishop Nick.  Hop Cross is back.  This 3.8% Spring Ale is extra pale and simply put it glows.  Goldings and Crystal hops promise earthy spice and floral bouquets.  Hop Cross is a worthy addition to the Rites of Spring but like the bun can be enjoyed any time of year.

If you sign up to our newsletter  sign-up form: http://eepurl.com/Ddkr1 you will qualify for 15% off until 31st March.  Quick 9 more days.  Claim your discount online or in our shop on site (open until 5pm Thursday 24th April and then closed for Easter) but back on Tues 29th.  Get the beers in for Easter.  Our mini casks (8.5pts) are a suitably indulgent alternative to a chocolate egg and vaguely the right shape!  Give us a buzz on 01376 349 605 and we’ll make them up to order.

We’ve just been up at SIBA BEER X in Sheffield where all things Beer were being bought/sold/promoted and talked about.  Exiting to be playing a part in this craft ale renaissance.  Exiting times and with frozen duty for Beer too.  Three cheers!  Let’s toast the Bishop!

Dark Mild

Dark Mild

Archive

Have you tried our latest Limited Edition, Dark Mild (3.7%)?

Aptly named, but not to be underestimated. Here’s one magnificent Mild.  Intense, dark and devilishly moreish, this smooth British classic is dominated by Chocolate Malt.

Easy on the hops but amply dry, this refreshing brew will keep you coming back.

CAMRA promotes mild throughout May.  We give you Dark Mild as our offering.

In cask at outlets across Essex throughout May and into June.  Also in 500ml bottles at selected stores, online and from our shop at 33 East Street, Braintree.

What is MILD?

Milds are black to dark brown to pale amber in colour and come in a variety of styles from warming roasty ales to light refreshing lunchtime thirst quenchers.  Malty and possibly sweet tones dominate the flavour profile but there may be a light hop flavour or aroma.  Alcohol levels are typically low.

All hail Real Ale

To celebrate our second anniversary in business we have invested in a new 20 barrel brewhouse and have moved to Braintree.

Conveniently located between Freeport and the town centre we are a stones throw from the site where Ridleys used to have a Maltings. So we feel at home. We believe we’re the first registered commercial brewery in Braintree, Essex. We are committed to producing quality ales and are now better able to meet the demands of the Essex free-trade. We look forward to casting our net further afield in East Anglia and beyond.

No longer so restricted by capacity, we plan, this winter, to launch a seasonal range to complement our three core beers. And the wheels are in motion to get bottling too. George Cullen is now full-time as our Assistant Brewer. He’s got his work cut out for him!
