Bishop Nick brewery took residence in Braintree 10yrs ago this month and to mark this milestone and show a commitment to the next ten years of trading (at least!!) we have given our celebrated range of core beers an exciting new facelift.

We have always had fantastic feedback about our branding, and we felt that, ten years on, our core range of beers – all of which have garnered top industry awards – now deserved a more customised look to celebrate their individuality.

We briefed our excellent designer, Chris Covey, to give each of the beers their own personality whilst staying true to the company identity which our customers have come to know and love.

Our branding was inspired by the history of our namesake Bishop Nicholas Ridley who was burned at the stake by Queen Mary in 1555 for heresy.

Nelion Ridley, Director of Bishop Nick, is directly descended from the Martyr and when his family brewery RIDLEYS was sold to Greene King in July 2005, he was keen to link in with his past for the graphic look for his craft brewery Bishop Nick.

The Tudor British wildlife ‘revellers’ remain a strong part of the identity with a couple of new characters joining the family and the monochrome woodcut print effect is very much on trend at the moment.

We have weathered the storms of COVID and the cost of living crisis and has come out fighting with turnover at an all time high. With a new Brewery Assistant and an additional Driver, the team is robust and excited about the next stretch at East Street.

Our trade customers have had a shockingly difficult few years and we, too, have had to cope with the soaring costs of raw materials and energy prices but we are proud of our product and it is testament to the passion and dedication of my team that the beer continues to be crafted with precision and care and our customers have remained loyal and word has spread. It has not been easy, but we have all adjusted to new ways of working over the last few years and continue to adapt to the needs of our trade customers and online consumers.

Head Brewer, Alex Ratter, supervises all aspects of the brewing process and alongside the permanent list of ales (which remain unaltered) enjoys conceiving new recipes and experimenting with new hop varieties to offer Limited Edition beers to complement the range on a monthly basis.

All at Bishop Nick are starting to gear up for their busiest season and hope that their vibrant new look will be attractive to Christmas shoppers and party planners alike!
